Smart ED: Electric ninja-mobile
Car Tech | 22 April 2008
Meet the Smart ED, an electric car that's set to revolutionise – or at the very least shake up – the way people get around. It's just like an ordinary Smart ForTwo: quirky-looking, easy to park and nimble, but with a couple of crucial differences. The Smart ED doesn't use any petrol and doesn't emit any nasty, toxic poison into the atmosphere. You simply charge it up over the mains, hop in and off you go.
Ford Focus Titanium 1.8 TDCi: The hatchback gets a facelift
Car Tech | 26 March 2008
In this episode of CNET.co.uk's Car Tech, Rory Reid looks at the 2008 Focus Titanium 1.8 TDCi, which boasts a new front grille, a more muscular rear end and a more dynamic, modern aesthetic. However it's not all improvements. Why is the sat-nav haunted? Why is the main information display the size of a wrist watch? Why is the 1.8-litre diesel engine so keen to stall at inopportune moments? Click the player and take a look...
Jaguar XKR Portfolio: Who's in control?
Car Tech | 14 March 2008
Ladies, geeks, petrolheads – we're proud to present a video of the most technologically advanced car we've ever driven. Meet the Jaguar XKR Portfolio edition, which literally drives itself. Just point it in the right direction and its Adaptive Cruise Control will automatically brake and accelerate for you. Not only that but its sound system is also the best we've heard in any non-modified car. And boasting 0-60 in just 4.9 seconds and a top speed of 200mph, it doesn't hang around either. All this for a mere £75,597...
Gadget Reviews | 10 March 2008
Apple's new laptop, the MacBook Air, may not be a true ultraportable, but it still easily breaks new ground for small laptops. At just 19mm at its thickest part, Apple's so-called 'world's thinnest notebook' includes most of the usual MacBook features, plus a multi-touch touchpad that uses innovative gesture controls.
Peugeot 308 S: Even diesels can rock
Car Tech | 12 February 2008
The Peugeot 308 S may be a diesel but don't let that put you off – it comes with bucket-loads of cool gadgets to mess around with. Our favourite additions include an electronic speed-limiting system that prevents you from going above whatever speed you set it to. Then there's the in-dash MP3 system, integrated iPod connector, an eight-speaker sound system with optional subwoofer, and the coup de grace: a panoramic sunroof with an electrically sliding cover.
Peugeot 207 GTi THP 175 Octane: White-hot hatch
Car Tech | 31 January 2008
The Peugeot 207 GTi THP 175 Octane edition is one of our favourite 'whips' to date. It's a hot hatchback with more high-tech gadgets than CES and more performance than is good for the state of your licence. It boasts rain-sensitive wipers, a 30GB hard drive for stashing your music, a sat-nav, auto-directional headlights and an in-dash mobile phone system. It even has its own sunglasses, or as Peugeot would say, an athermic windscreen to reflect UV light. Take a look...
CES: The attack of the MP3 taser
Crave TV | 18 January 2008
Do you have serious concerns about your personal safety? Taser International has developed an MP3 player with a built-in taser, guaranteed to instantly transform a potential attacker into a writhing, crippled heap on the floor. Don't believe us? See it here – CNET.co.uk's Rory Reid manages to persuade one brave guy to volunteer to be tasered on the show floor at CES in Las Vegas.
CES: Kenwood goes to town on a 1956 Chevy Bel Air
Crave TV | 17 January 2008
CNET.co.uk's Rory Reid was caught drooling over this 1956 Chevrolet Bel Air at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, and for good reason. It may look pretty standard on the outside, but inside it has a fully motorised dashboard. Hit the button on the key fob, and out pops a tray containing an Xbox 360 controller and an iPod nano. From here, you can enjoy a spot of Halo 3 on the 7-inch in-dash display, or bump some 'choons' through the speakers, which seem to be located in every possible orifice of the car.
CES: Alienware's bad boy ALX PC and curved display
Crave TV | 09 January 2008
Alienware wowed CNET.co.uk at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas with not one, but two incredible pieces of technology. First up was its 42-inch Curved Display, which redefines the term widescreen. It's curved like an enormous pair of wrap-around shades -- the idea being that it provides a more immersive gaming experience. And last but not least was the Alienware ALX -- which drew a pretty big crowd because of the sheer outlandishness of its specification and the awesome styling of its new P2 chassis. Take a look for yourself...
G-Wiz: Small steps to a cleaner planet
Car Tech | 29 November 2007
CNET.co.uk's Rory Reid is back with another attempt to save the planet – this time in the G-Wiz, a fully electric car that turns its nose up at the first whiff of petrol. It's cheap, economical to run and its small size means it's great for city driving, but it's not without flaws. Can you be convinced to ditch your gas-guzzler?
