Video View: Ladyhawke, Delays and Roisin Murphy
Nate Lanxon's back with the latest music videos once again, and in this episode it's as if he stepped back in time as we're treated to big hair, smoke machines and synth lines a-plenty with New Zealand's answer to Berlinda Carlisle, Ladyhawke, and her latest single 'Back of the Van'. Next up is Delays with 'Everything's the Rush', the video to which was directed by Lee Lennox, who did a brilliant video for The Presets last year; and finally we round off with some chart-friendly pop with Roisin Murphy's 'You Know Me Better'.
Hi, I'm Nate Lanxon and you're watching Video View, which is an online show where we view some videos.
First up this week is New Zealand's answer to Belinda Carlise, Ladyhawke, whose debut single, 'Back of the Van', is out now on download only.
Now, don't panic, when you reset your computer clock so that those pirate versions of Photoshop would work you didn't actually go back in time, this is 2008 and you are watching a woman with a dodgy Suzi Quattro bouffant warble over the kind of synth line that would make Stevie Nicks go weak at the knees.
The amazingly retro video was directed by Kinga Burza, the woman behind Kate Nashs 'Foundations' and the beautifully innocent sex fest in the Teenager's 'Homecoming' vid, and you can see it in full on everyone's favourite video sharing website, YouTube.
Next up it's the latest video from new Fiction Records signings Delays, who've had more record labels in their short life span than I've had goldfish.
It's not just record labels that Delays seem to shed like crusty old snakeskin, they've also been through a few name changes too. The depressingly awful Corky was their first name, before they got it oh-so wrong again with the painfully pretentious Idoru, which is some kind of geeky William Gibson reference.
This video was directed by Lee Lennox, who did a really cool Presets video last year, and I've just realised how rubbish this song is. If you want to be annoyed by it in full, head over to their MySpace page.
If you're still watching, and haven't caved my virtual face in with a teacup, then let me try and redeem myself with a nice slice of chart-friendly pop from Moloko lady Roisin Murphy.
'You Know Me Better' came out last week, and it's exactly what you'd expect from a seasoned chart-botherer like Roisin. What's really interesting about this video, which is pretty ace, is that it was directed by Canadian genius Jaron Albertin, the man behind the mind bending Death From Above 1979 video 'Sexy Results'. If you've got a spare ten minutes, put his name into YouTube and check out his work for Dave Gahan and Emily Haines. While you're there, make sure you peep the full version of 'You Know Me Better'.
