Episode 9: Nick Cave digs like Lazarus
Nate Lanxon returns with the first Encoded of 2008 and brings a bumper hard drive full of audible goodies both old and new. Aussie writer, actor, singer and full time lord of darkness Nick Cave brings us his latest video; 90s hip-hop legend Guru resurfaces with a new album of smooth jazz-inspired beats; and rising hardcore punk stars Gallows bring news of a new album and single.

Happy New Year, I'm Nate Lanxon and welcome to the first Encoded of 2008. We start this week with the new video from Aussie lothario Nick Cave, who along with his band the Bad Seeds has a new single out on February 18th
'Dig, Lazarus, Dig!!!' is the first single from the band's fourteenth studio album, and sees Cave retain the sleazy basement-rock sound he honed on last year's Grinderman project. The video was directed by visual artists Iain Forsyth and Jane Pollard, and features Nick pretending to jog... unmissable stuff.
Another old timer with a spanking new video is Guru, the former Gangstarr rapper who introduced the world to lounge-core hip-hop in the mid nineties through his popular Jazzmatazz series. Well, Guru has returned, and, you've guessed it, he's got more laid-back noodles over which to spit his rhymes. Or something.
Gathering together a motley crew of hip-hop and RnB heroes, Jazzmatazz The Mixtape is released in late February via Rapster Records. You can check out the video to lead single Jazzyways at www.guru-themixtape.com, or head over to www.soulseduction.com to stream all the tracks on the album for free.
Which takes us ever so smoothly into this week's free download, which comes from the other end of the industry in the form of a free EP by indie-experimentalists Super Tennis.
Full of post-rock yelps and poppy hooks, the youngsters from London have four tracks to download from supertennis.co.uk, as well as some cool cover art too. Expect Lamacq and the other new music champions to be all over Super Tennis this year as their reputation grows like an oak.
You can catch them live three times in London before the end of the month, with two shows on the 26th and one on the 29th. Check out their MySpace page for full details.
Tour news now, and death-obsessed folksters Noah and the Whale have just announced that they are to headline the first ever Young & Lost Club tour. The super-cool London indie label heads up and down Britain in early February with a number of their artists in tow, including new signings Naked and the Boys who provide support on all the dates.
The tour starts on February 4th in Nottingham and ends with a Valentine's Day shindig in Leeds on the 14th. Head over to www.myspace.com/youngandlostclub for more details.
Details of this year's South by Southwest Festival in Texas have been announced, with the list of bands playing growing by the day on the festival's official website. Bands so far confirmed to play include The Kills, Vampire Weekend, Sons and Daughters and The Black Keys, as well a catalogue of people that you've never heard of... some of which you will have heard of once the men in suits go loopy in the Texan sun.
Also performing at SXSW will be Neon Neon, the new project from Super Furry Animals frontman Gruff Rhys and LA producer Boom Bip. Their album Stainless Style comes out on Lex Records on March 17th, and will be preceded by their debut single 'I Lust You' at the end of this month.
The album is based around the remarkably decadent lifestyle of American entrepreneur John Delorian, famous for designing the super-cool car in Back to the Future. Guests on the album include The Magic Numbers, Fatlip from The Pharcyde and new Domino Records signings Yo Majesty. Check out a couple of tracks, including a song all about 60s screen icon Raquel Welch on their MySpace page.
Another band with a new record to push are Gallows, who have announced details of a live album and new single, 'Just Because You Sleep Next To Me Doesn't Mean You're Safe', which will come out on February 25th, with Live At The 100 Club following on March 3rd on CD and DVD.
The hardcore group from Watford have experienced a meteoric rise over the last nine months that started with a colon-stretching headline set at Brighton's Great Escape Festival and ended with lead singer Frank Carter topping the NME's cool list of 2007. This year is likely to be even bigger, and if they don't finish the summer headlining one of the stages at Reading, I'll eat my own face.
