Movie Review: Things We Lost in the Fire
Susanne Bier's Things We Lost in the Fire once again provides Halle Berry with a proper meaty dramatic role. In this sombre grief-fest, Halle plays a recently widowed woman who strikes up an unusual relationship with a friend of her late husband, a recovering drug addict played by Benicio Del Toro. It doesn't make for a particularly cheery night out, but it is an impressively serious look at loss and redemption.
When she collected her Best Actress Oscar in 2001, it looked like Halle Berry might have actually found herself a proper, serious acting career. But that was before the likes of Catwoman, Gothika and The Perfect Stranger, woeful excuses for cinema that quickly undid any goodwill towards the one-time Miss USA. Luckily, Things We Lost in the Fire provides Berry with a proper meaty dramatic role once more. In this sombre grief-fest, Halle plays a recently widowed woman who strikes up an unusual relationship with a friend of her late husband, a recovering drug addict played by Benicio Del Toro.
Things We Lost in the Fire marks the American debut of Susanne Bier, the Danish director of last year's art-house hit After the Wedding and a former part of Lars Von Trier’s Dogme crew. As a result, and despite the starry cast, the film looks and feels very different from your typical Hollywood weep-athon. Bier shoots much of the film in intimate close-up, focusing in particular on the eyes of her tormented characters. It's a technique that will annoy as much as it endears, but certainly gives the film a powerful edge.
Berry might not be collecting a second Oscar for her work here, but thankfully she won't be adding a second Razzie either. It's a complex role, as she veers believably from grief and anger to having to remain strong for her children. But it's Benicio Del Toro who provides the film's strongest performance as the former heroin addict who feels compelled to help Berry in return for the kindest her late husband once showed him. He's as good here as he was in Traffic or 21 Grams – when it comes to portraying someone wracked with insecurity, staring defeat in the face, no one does it better than Del Toro. In fact, if they ever decide to make a Gordon Brown biopic, he's the man for the job. Things We Lost in the Fire doesn't make for a particularly cheery night out, but is an impressively serious look at loss and redemption. Let's just hope Berry tells her agent to keep that Catwoman II script to himself this time.
