Movie Review: Diary of the Dead
Reel Weekend | 07 March 2008
Veteran horror filmmaker George A. Romero may not have invented zombies, but he pretty much invented the zombie movie as we know it back in 1966, with his undead classic Night of the Dead. George's now back with the latest in the Dead line of movies, Diary of the Dead. Luckily this isn't the tale of a lovesick, 30-something PR zombie keeping track of how many brains she's eaten in her secret diary – it's a low budget, handheld account of the outbreak of the zombie plague from the point of view of a bunch of irritating students.

In the first Reel Weekend of 2008 we welcome in the new year with a look forward to the unmissable movies coming your way over the next 12 months. Daniel Day Lewis comes out of semi-retirement to mesmerise critics and audiences alike in the awesome There Will Be Blood, Batman is back and darker than ever – with Heath Ledger trading Brokeback Mountain for the giggling insanity of the Joker, and Harrison Ford hopes to prove that age shall not wither a whip-wielding adventurer in Indiana Jones and the Kingdom of the Crystal Skull.

An updated version of the best-selling original N95, the 8GB is still rather chunky, but there are a few serious changes that make it a significantly better phone than its predecessor. Obviously it has more internal memory, but its interface is easier to use and the black casing really suits it.
Movie Review: 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days
Reel Weekend | 11 January 2008
Last year's winner of the Palme D’Or and one of the most acclaimed international releases of the year, 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days is a difficult, dark and downbeat tale of backstreet abortion in 80s Romania. Admittedly, it may not sound like a good night at the movies but don't be put off – this film is as gripping and tense a thriller as you can imagine.
Movie Review: Before The Devil Knows You're Dead
Reel Weekend | 11 January 2008
Veteran director of classics such as Dog Day Afternoon, Network and Serpico, Sidney Lumet returns to the director’s chair to bring to the screen this gritty crime drama, starring Philip Seymour Hoffman and Ethan Hawke as brothers whose attempt at a jewellery robbery goes disastrously wrong. Dark, brooding and morally corrupt, this is a film that avoids easy solutions or upbeat endings, and is all the better for it.
Movie Review: Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story
Reel Weekend | 18 January 2008
Walk Hard is a spoof of the musical biopic, most notably the Johnny Cash movie Walk The Line, but with elements of Ray, The Rutles and of course This Is Spinal Tap thrown in for good measure. It’s the story of Dewey Cox, a good ol' boy from the wrong side of the tracks, and his ascent through the world of country music. John C Reilly gives the character of Dewey far more depth than you’d expect, and embraces the chance to make himself looks ridiculous in nearly every scene.

This week sees Tarantino's Death Proof arrive on DVD, giving us all a chance to see how it fairs on the small screen. Kurt Russell plays the murderous Stuntman Mike, who preys on innocent young women with his souped up, specially adapted Chevy Nova. There's plenty of hip, pop culture-savvy dialogue, shocking moments of blackly funny violence and a groovy collection of 70s tunes on the soundtrack, but is that really enough to class Death Proof as a great film?

There's no mistaking where the Samsung F700 takes its design inspiration from – it's a dead ringer for the iPhone. But while Apple's phone is hamstrung by its limited EDGE system, the F700 has full-blooded HSDPA mobile broadband. Can its interface bear the same comparison, though?

Paul Thomas Anderson and Daniel Day-Lewis team up to bring to the screen this epic tale of greed, religion and oil. Day Lewis is grabbing plenty of awards attention for his portrayal of Daniel Plainview - a scheming, vicious, backstabbing oil baron who'll stop at nothing to get what he wants - who enters into a battle of wills and wits against a young preacher, played by Paul Dano. Gripping, epic, and with a terrifying score by Jonny Greenwood of Radiohead, There Will Be Blood is one of the first genuine must-see films of the year.
